In Dec. 2018, my then fiancé, Nick and I wanted to give my niece, Natalie, something special for her 8th birthday. We wanted it to be meaningful as we had just recently asked Natalie and her younger sister to be flower girls in our upcoming wedding. Unfortunately, there were no toys that connected with us or reflected our wedding. So, we went to task and created our own “Same-Sex Barbie Wedding Set.” This took a couple purchases and creativity, but it turned out great! When Natalie unwrapped her gift, she immediately said, “They look exactly like you! I love it.” Her reaction inspired us to post a picture of our custom wedding set and a message to Mattel with the hopes to inspire them to make something where all weddings could be created by kids. After posting, #Mattel got back to me and invited us to their headquarters. During that time, news of our wedding set creation went viral around the world. The support we received was powerful. A conversation was being had that was never had before. In Jan. 2019, we arrived at Mattel for our meeting. There we met the talented #Barbie team, where we showed them a presentation and had a very mindful conversation. During that meeting they welcomed us into the #BarbieFamily, and we learned what they’d been up to regarding increasing inclusion and representation in the future. We stayed in touch month after month. Today, we are excited to share with you the latest Barbie #BarbieStyle Wedding Fashion Packets. This will give children the tools to imagine any kind of wedding they want. All couples can now be represented with their choice of wedding fashions along with the brand’s diverse doll line. For children all around the world, they now have the opportunity to put together, narrate, and play out a wedding day that is reflective of their own life experience. We have great trust in Barbie, and will continue to keep you posted on more! For now, we invite you to enjoy playtime with your little ones, while reminding you that love is love. 💗 #WeAreBarbie
